Scott Wilson Nepal hosts Regional Training on Climate-Resilient Transport Infrastructure, Bangkok, Thailand | October 2, 2024
Scott Wilson Nepal (SWN), in collaboration with the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) and the World Bank, led a regional training in Bangkok on Strategic Action Plans (SAP), Climate-Resilient Design Standards, and Tools for Roads and Bridges. The event strengthened institutional capacity across South Asia to address climate risks in roads & bridges through evidence-based policies, hazard assessments, and Nature-based Solutions (NbS).
The event was participated by 20 senior infrastructure professionals and policymakers, of whom 29% were women, from Bhutan, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Bangladesh (online) and contributed to fostering knowledge exchange on understanding and integrating climate-resilient design approaches and technical parameters into the transport infrastructure design process.
The event was designed to contribute to strengthening the institutional capacity of government institutions of South Asian countries to address climate risks in road and bridge design through evidence-based policies, hazard assessments, and nature-based solutions (NbS).
Key Focus Areas
The training addressed critical gaps in:
- Climate-Resilient Transport Infrastructure (design standards, tools)
- Hazard assessments and NbS applications
- Policy frameworks for long-term adaptation
Outcomes & Impact
The event delivered actionable knowledge and direction to the participants through presentations and rigorous participatory discussions. Post-training evaluations demonstrated significant improvements in understanding of climate-resilient design principles.
Key outcomes of the event were
- Disaster Risk Reduction: The science and meaning of disaster risk reduction and climate-resilient infrastructure, and what design approach could be considered.
- Cost-Effective Design: What specific actionable design considerations could enable more resilient transport infrastructures, and what costs are involved in doing so
- Strategic Action Plans (SAP): What specific Strategic Action Plans (SAP) should be considered for long-term climate adaptation, and would this mean updating or developing technical policies, standards, and technical norms
- Road Asset Management (RAMS): How climate resilience can be integrated into Road Asset Management Systems (RAMS).
- Nature-Based Solutions (NbS): How practical case studies from Nepal that evolved over the past 35 years on slope stabilization using bioengineering could be developed to shaping Nature-based Solutions (NbS) applications to transport infrastructures.
Looking Ahead
Participants shared the following insightful feedback to shape future training initiatives:
- “Collaboration between governments, academia, and industry is critical to scaling climate resilience.”
- “Localized data and adaptable frameworks are essential for effective implementation.”
- Develop regionally relevant case studies and user-friendly tools to make complex concepts more accessible.
