Nepal has set an ambitious goal to achieve universal access to clean, reliable, and affordable renewable energy solutions by 2030. This transition is expected to reduce the country’s reliance on traditional and imported energy sources by expanding access to locally available renewable options. Renewable energy is understood as a set of energy sources that are predominantly usable or likely to be used in rural and urban areas and include sources such as biogas, small and micro hydropower, solar energy, improved water mills, improved cooking stoves, wind energy, etc.
Scott Wilson Nepal actively supports the Government of Nepal/ Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) and its development partners such as SNV, FCDO, Centre For Renewable Technology Nepal (CRTN), GIZ and ADB in renewable energy in advancing affordable and sustainable renewable energy solutions. SWN promotes these applications of these energy sources so that:
- RE can reach out to the remote areas with little access to modern facilities.
- RE can be more attractive to poorer segments of societies with low levels of income provided initial investment costs are reduced through financing mechanisms.
- RE is clean and can replace traditional carbon-based energy sources.
- RE can contribute to better health of women who often are compelled to use unhealthy traditional energy sources (e.g. firewood, coal, or kerosene-based appliances).
- RE have the potential to alleviate poverty and improve overall socio-economic well-being.
SWN contributes through research, assessments, evaluations, and implementation of renewable energy technologies. The firm has undertaken various initiatives, including:
- Renewable Energy Users Survey
- Carbon redemption analysis and feasibility studies
- Market assessments of renewable energy technologies
- Research on innovative financing mechanisms
- Policy reviews and stakeholder consultations on renewable energy
- Impact evaluations of technologies such as biogas, PicoPV systems, solar energy, and micro-hydropower
- Functionality and Socio-Economic Assessment of RE Technologies
These efforts aim to strengthen Nepal’s renewable energy landscape and ensure inclusive, long-term energy access for all.
