Background
Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) with the support of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Society (IFRC) and the American Red Cross (AmRC) initiated the Paschim Disaster Preparedness Project Phase II in 24 communities and 12 schools of Baitadi and Doti districts. SWN was assigned by IFRC and AmRC for a final assessment of the community and school disaster readiness to gauge their understanding of disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) and level of preparedness capacity. The project covered nine wards of four rural municipalities
Project Objectives
The objectives of the assignment were:
- To access the communities’ and schools’ level of understanding on disaster risk reduction and management and disaster preparedness specifically in terms of their self-organization, ability to take action, knowledge, awareness, and connectivity.
- To find the differences in the communities’ awareness, understanding, and preparedness for disaster risk reduction and management and response in comparison with the baseline study to provide further recommendations for sustainable achievements.
Key Activities and Service Provided
SWN will undertake the following activities:
- Carried out 24 FGDs, 28 KIIs, 120 mini households survey and observation for Community disaster readiness assessment in 24 communities.
- Carried out 12 FGDs, 16 KIIs, 240 school mini survey and observation for school disaster readiness assessment.
- In FGDs the representation of women, disabled people, old aged people, and marginalized communities was ensured.
- Presentation of the findings with key stakeholders.
Outcome
Outputs of the project are as follows:
- Disaster readiness assessment report with recommendation for the implementation for next phase.
