Background
Climate Trek Nepal is a project of atmosfair GmbH that aims to establish trekking paths and eco-friendly lodges to promote eco-tourism following the 2015 earthquake. From 2017 to 2020, SWN provided engineering services and guidance to construct eco-friendly, sustainable, earthquake-resilient lodges equipped with Renewable Energy Technologies (RETs) and water and waste systems.
SWN was awarded technical assessment of the performance of installed renewable energy systems in lodges and social buildings in Langtang and Helambu region.
Objective of the Assignment
The main objective of this assignment was to conduct a technical assessment of the performance of installed renewable energy systems in the social buildings and lodges supported under Climate Trek Nepal in the Langtang and Helambu trekking routes.
The specific objectives w as follows:
- Conduct assessments of solar water heating systems, solar PV systems, and other renewable energy-based technologies installed in lodges and social buildings in Langtang and Helambu.
- Provide training and guidance to hotel owners and employees on the proper operation and maintenance of solar PV systems.
- Ensure proper installation and usage of sustainable technologies in compliance with relevant standards, regulations, and general practice.
Key Activities and Service Provided by SWN
SWN undertook the following activities:
- Technical assessment of renewable energy systems in 11 lodges, 2 schools, and 1 community health center in the Helambu region
- Technical assessment of renewable energy systems in 7 lodges, 2 community halls, and 1 community health center in Langtang region
- Status report including a general impression of assessed buildings.
- Analysis and recommendations for proper use and maintenance of sustainable technologies.
Outputs
The outputs of the project were as follows:
- Technical assessment of renewable energy technologies installed in 24 buildings (lodges and social buildings) to evaluate the functionality and measures necessary to operate and maintain them.
- Preparation of a detailed status report of the technical assessment conducted in the Langtang and Helambu region
