Background
Scott Wilson Nepal (SWN) provides technical assistance to Okharbot Organic Farm Pvt. Ltd. in Dhulikhel to mitigate widespread landslides and slope instabilities around the resort farm area due to the incessant rains of September 2024.
SWN assessed the slope failures and drainage patterns and offered an optimized nature-based solutions (NbS) based design together with simple and low-cost civil engineering structures to stabilize slopes, manage runoff to protect the structures, and build landslide resilience by building on extensive use of local materials and plant species. Key activities include site assessment, resource-optimized design, layout and technical backstopping for the contractor, on-site and online quality monitoring, and reporting to the client.
Objective of the Assignment
The key objectives of this assignment were:
- To conduct site assessment of the land damaged due to incessant rains in September 2024
- Provide the nature-based solutions (NbS)-based design together with simple and low-cost civil engineering structures
- Quality assurance of Slope Stabilization Works at Orkharbot Organic Farm areas
Key Activities and Services Provided by SWN
SWN carried out the following activities:
- Offered a design optimized for the available limited resources with the strength requirements, bringing to the design the strength of the nature-based solutions (NbS) achieved over a longer period.
- Oriented the OOF team so that the team is familiar with the NbS practices and their strengths over time so that the team can undertake the implementation process, continual maintenance, and incremental improvements that may be necessary over time.
- Conducted a site assessment of the land damaged due to incessant rains in September 2024, based on mutually agreed observations by SWN and OOF.
- Performed necessary measurements and prepared a detailed design and cost estimate for slope stabilization.
- Provided periodic technical backstopping through visits or online media.
- Undertook additional technical and design support if necessary and with an additional fee if applicable.
- Certified the actual work quantity and reported on the quality of the works of the contractor based on the observations of the monitoring engineer and the experts.


Outputs
Prepared an NbS-driven slope stabilization design incorporating simple and cost-effective civil engineering measures. Additionally, provided ongoing technical backstopping and ensured quality assurance for all slope stabilization works carried out at the Organic Farm area.
