Background
Pratibaddha-III “Whole of Society Approach for Increased Risk Ownership, Multi-Hazard Preparedness and Early Action in Hill Areas of western Nepal” is a European Union funded program that builds on the successes of EU-funded Pratibaddha-I and Pratibaddha-II. Pratibaddha-III aims to strengthen the leadership and joint risk ownership of at-risk communities, local governments, and provincial governments in disaster mitigation, preparedness, and early action.
SWN is a consortium partner with People in Need (PIN), Community Self-Reliance Center (CSRC) and Save the Children Nepal and technically supports Pratibaddha-III to implement the activities under Result 1.
Objective of the Assignment
The principal objective of the project is to contribute to increased resilience of at-risk communities in Nepal’s western provinces’ landslide and earthquake-prone areas.
The specific objective of the project is to strengthen at-risk communities’ and local, and provincial governments’ leadership and joint risk ownership in disaster mitigation, preparedness, and early action in central and west provinces of Nepal.
Key Activities and Service Provided by SWN
Under this project, SWN is undertaking following activities:
- Assessment of landslide vulnerable sites and categorize them into CAT-I, II and III
- Sub-categorize the CAT-II settlements and support communities to implement mitigation measures
- Facilitate implementation of Rural Road Construction Guideline and climate smart approaches for road construction at risk communities
- Supporting policy reviews to municipalities and provincial governments for disaster-resilient infrastructure development.
- Implementing Nature-based Solutions for resilient roads and landslide mitigation measures in six municipalities of western province and four municipalities of central province.
- Supporting municipalities and provincial governments on policy reviews for disaster-resilient infrastructure.
Outputs
- Geohazard Assessment for up to 173 landslide-vulnerable communities to evaluate risks and prioritize interventions.
- Implementation of bio-engineering/Nature-based Solutions in 12 Category II communities as a measure for landslide risk mitigation.
- Support to six Local Governments in formulating and implementing Road Construction Guidelines for sustainable and safe road infrastructure development.
- Support to six municipalities with a manual for landslide mitigation using bio-engineering/Nature-based Solutions.
