Background
Lightnings are natural events that can cause significant damage to electrical systems, infrastructure and cause human as well as cattle fatalities. In hill region where the terrain and weather conditions are extreme, the risk of lightning strikes is particularly high.
The highlands of Jumla have over the years seen significant economic loss due to frequent lightning strikes at its highland pastures.
Patarasi Rural Municipality (RM), Jumla, in Karnali Province, in support of FCDO funded NCCSP-2 program seeks to protect livestock from lightning strikes grazing in open highland pasture.
Patarasi RM assigned SW Nepal Pvt. Ltd. (SWN) to design lightning protection system to mitigate the impacts of lightening in highland pastures.
Objective of the Assignment
The overall objective of this assignment is to protect livestock from lightning strikes on open grazing land. The specific objective of the assignment are:
- To design the lightning protection system in adherence to national/international standards and guidelines,
- Prepare the design, drawings and estimates of all the components.
Key Activities and Service Provided by SWN
SWN undertook the following activities:
- Field Assessment of open highland pastures of Patarasi Rural Municipality, Jumla, Karnali Province
- Design of Lightning Protection System for highland pastures
- Preparation of Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Lightning Protection System
- Submission of report and presentation in Patarasi, Jumla
Outputs
Outputs of the project were as follows:
- Detailed Design, Cost Estimate for Installation of Lightning Protection System in Ward No. 1 and Ward No.4 of Patarasi Rural Municipality
- Detailed Project Report of Lightning Protection System in highland pastures of Patarasi
